The winners of the League’s 2012-2013 Student Literary Competition, hosted by Foothill-De Anza Community College District and coordinated by Ken Weisner, were recently announced.  The awards were presented as follows:

In the category of Nonfiction: First Place, Jennifer De Rose, St. Louis Community College, “Coal Factory;” Second Place, Audrey Craig, Sinclair Community College, “Making Beautiful, Being Made;” Third Place, Sophie Pierce, Lane Community College, “Past The Yellow Tulips;” Honorable Mention, Shang-Lun Ko, Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, “The Pink Star.”

In the category of Fiction: First Place, Elizabeth Grant, St. Louis Community College,  “Leda and the Swan;” Second Place, James K. Smith, Seattle Central Community College, “Elf-kicker;” Third Place; Andrew Beckner, San Diego Community College District, “The Reynolds;” Honorable Mention; Natasha Anderson, Phoenix College, Maricopa County Community College District, “Addie and the Second Coming.”

In the category of Poetry: First Place, Paulina Lopez, Brookhaven College, Dallas County Community College District, “Satellites;” Second Place, Jeffrey Son, De Anza Community College, “Senseless;” Third Place, Lacey Pruitt Thomas, Monroe Community College, “Phylogeny;” Honorable Mention, Michael Weddington, Central Piedmont Community College, “Like Autumn Leaves.”

In the category of One-Act Plays: First Place, Luis Jimenez, Moraine Valley Community College, “Chessman Cometh;” Second Place, Audrey Ackerman, South Seattle Community College, “Close to the Sun;” Third Place, Endya Goliday, St. Louis Community College, “Small Talk.”

Under the leadership of Foothill-De Anza Community College District, the competition included 63 literary works from students at League board colleges. A catalog of all entries is currently being produced by Foothill-De Anza Community College District and will be mailed to League Board members this fall.

The jurors for this year’s Student Literary Competition were Stephen Kuusisto (Essay), Juan Felipe Herrera (Poetry), Lisa McKenzie (Short Story), and Josh Kornbluth (One-Act Play).  Each of the judges has published works and won awards for their literary pieces.
