Excellence Awards Recipient Detail Information

Michelle "Toni" Parsons
Professor, Mathematics
San Diego Mesa College
Statement:  I was not the kid that said, "I am going to be a teacher when I grow up.", even though I was a little on the "bossy" side. I wanted to design roller coasters. As I went through my engineering courses and started to tutor my fellow classmates, I fell in love with helping others to succeed in education. I was hooked and have been ever since. I am a math professor that finds a way to take the "I hate math" students to the "I can't believe she actually made math fun." I have created my own roller coaster and I take my students along for the ride. As long as my students keep succeeding and feel like I might have had a small part in that, then I am blessed and inspired to keep doing what I do. I don't think there is a recipe for being a successful teacher or leader, it's just what I have a passion for. If you believe in what you are doing, then students and faculty will too.
