Statement:	Students are not fungible. A graduate is not the product of teaching many different students. I know all my students by name and often I will follow them as their instructor as they progress through the sequence of chemistry courses. I offer all freshmen the opportunity to engage in undergraduate research, whereby we learn together and create new knowledge. Students synthesize new molecules that have never been prepared before. Excellence for me means that faculty members are also not fungible.
