The Cross Papers at 15

The fifteenth issue of The Cross Papers, a series launched in 1997 by the League for Innovation and K. Patricia Cross, is scheduled for release on March 4, 2012, at the League’s Innovations conference in Philadelphia. As part of the celebration of this milestone anniversary, the League will honor K. Patricia Cross at the conference for her many contributions to community college teaching, learning, and research.

Written specifically for community college faculty, The Cross Papers have become a standard tool for professional development focused on effective, innovative practices in teaching and learning. Over the years, community college educators have used The Cross Papers as tools for stimulating discussion, providing orientation and training to new faculty and staff, rejuvenating veteran employees, and designing successful practices and strategies for reaching the diverse groups of students who come through the open doors of community colleges every day.

Number 15 in the series, Making It Real: Using Contextualization for Student Success, was written by Donna McKusick, the 2011-2012 recipient of The Cross Papers Fellowship. McKusick will present her work during a Special Session at the conference. Her contribution to The Cross Papers focuses on contextualization as a strategy for student success and completion, and in the tradition of the series, McKusick synthesizes theory and research while offering numerous examples of contextualization in practice.

The format for the monographs was established by K. Patricia Cross, who wrote the first seven issues of The Cross Papers. After retiring, she ensured continuation of the series by working with the League to establish The Cross Papers Fellowship. With her generous support, the fellowship has been awarded to eight community college scholar/practitioners, and competition for the ninth fellowship is currently under way.
