Walmart Foundation Grant Helps Community Colleges Train Displaced Workers

Phoenix, AZ (August 17, 2009) – Eight community colleges from around the country have been selected to participate in the Walmart Brighter Futures Project led by the League for Innovation in the Community College. The Walmart Foundation is providing a $3.5 million grant to fund the project, designed to help the selected community colleges work with their local and regional workforce development community to offer a variety of services and training to people who are seeking employment following a job loss.

Groundbreaking Partnership Offers Solar Training Program

A groundbreaking training partnership involving the federal Job Corps, Anne Arundel Community College, and the Independent Electrical Contractors is the first in the nation to offer its students photovoltaic installation training. Recognizing the need to get workers trained in this emerging field, the partners will offer a certification by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners to students completing the program.
