Ten Core Principles for Designing Online or On
Campus Learning:
The Jungle Brain Meets the Tundra Brain
Our teaching and learning
environments, online or on campus, support an infinite number of
ways for faculty and students to communicate. However, most of the
focus of our new teaching and learning tools has been on technology
rather than learners or the faculty. Judith Boettcher encourages new
thinking about the content of communications and how the
technologies are used. Boettcher presents 10 core learning
principles derived from learning theorists and cognitive researchers
such as Dewey, Bruner, and Vygotsky. These principles provide
insights into how learners and faculty use their tools and their
brains. They can also serve as guidelines for evaluating the
effectiveness and efficiency of new tools. Participants will likely
recognize a few principles and hopefully bond with one or two new
ones.
