Chavez, Ph.D., is the chancellor of the Foothill-De
Anza Community College District, one of the preeminent
community college districts in the nation. Prior to
accepting his current position Chavez was president
of West Valley College for six years and was a history/ethnic
studies instructor and administrator at San Jose City
College for 13 years.
He
received his B.A. degree in history from the University of Texas,
El Paso, and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in history from the University
of Michigan, Ann Arbor. The University of Texas, El Paso, recognized
Chavez as alumnus of the year by awarding him the Golden Nugget
Award.
An
active member of the community, he serves on the boards of the Chief
Executive Officers of the California Community Colleges, Comerica
Bank, the Commission on Athletics (for California Community Colleges),
Community Foundation Silicon Valley, the Gardner Center Advisory
Board (John Gardner Center for Youth and Their Communities), the
League for Innovation in the Community College, and the Skoll Community
Fund.
Chavez
lives with his wife and family in Saratoga.
